So I have been thinking alot about the principles behind student loans lately and have come to the conclusion that it is one of the biggest scams out there. The reason for this is that as a 17 or 18 year old you have little to no concept of the reality of college costs or debt. All you want at that age is to go to the coolest school you visited or the one that has your major or your friends. Little else matters, least of all the idea of having to pay back that decision in 5 or 6 years when you are making more money than you ever have before. As college tuition raises, whether or not this is legit, the harsh reality is that most students who want to pursue a college degree will be forced to take out large amounts of debt to pay for it. Many kids live fairly comfortable for 4-5 years in college and then graduate with a degree that limits their opportunities and options. Say for example you are a marketing major at a Public University, and had little to no help from your family. You are likely 30k in debt at this point and forced to take the first available sales job offered you. It is likely terrible with a salary of somewhere around 30k. All of a sudden your take home pay of 2000 a month is cut to 1600 after you pay 400 bucks a month in loan payments. Add in rent, car, insurance, and all the other pricey things that new grads face and you have very little left over for 401k or savings. However, none of this is all that terrible considering that a 22-23 year old grad doesnt deserve to have a new car or a house, but for whatever reason (probably having to do with the fact that they were able to go to whatever school they wanted no matter the cost) they feel as though they are entitled to those things. So they take out credit cards to buy new clothes and cover daily expenses, nights on the town, and dinners out. The next thing you know these kids are in way over their heads, their jobs are going nowhere or they are being laid off in downtimes. It is a never ending cycle.
Parents today have done little to prepare for college tuitions, and do their children little good by letting them go to whatever school accepts them with the promise of a great degree (which society has made to be necessary). After all who doesn't want their children at a good school? Parents like to brag on their kids accomplishments the way a 20 something likes to brag on his new car. Whether its right or not it gives kids the idea that they can live a life of luxury that they have grown accustomed to straight out of college. There are no pensions, little social security and an increase in debt. I think the decisions of today will likely force most of this generation to work until they die. Its a sad truth but its a harsh reality. All we can do is take care of ourselves and hope that the government doesn't take it all away from us before we get to retirement.

B-town and www.Ticketstumbler.com
So I am sitting here in Boston at my friends apartment and thinking about how much I don't want to go back to work on Monday let alone everyday for the next 40 years of my life. Work should be fun, interesting and something you would do in your spare time. I don't know about you, but I don't want to do taxes in my spare time (so don't ask me.) Part of the reason I am here is to visit a friend who moved here a couple of months ago to start an internet startup company called www.Ticketstumbler.com which is a secondary sports ticket finder. Basically its like kayak.com or sidestep only for the sports ticket world. They basically search all of the ticket sites (think stubhub, ticketcity etc) and pool them all into one nice summary of all your available options. They make money from the ticket sites themselves for any sale that is made through their site. Basically the ticket companies are willing to share the wealth for the increase in ticket traffic. If you ask me the idea is absolutely genius and inspiring. It makes me realize that the founders of these internet startups really are just regular people who took a chance. This gives me hope that I too can find an idea, find the right people and bring it profitability. It is a big chore, but one well worth it to do what it is that you love to do and want to do everyday. So while I am going to go see Fenway park, please check out www.ticketstumbler.com and any tickets you might buy on stubhub will contribute to a good cause (that being my friends wellbeing). Also, tell anyone and everyone to use it word of mouth is the best form of advertising.

Hydrogen Fuel
Honda released the Honda Clarity in certain parts of California
recently, and for whatever reason it seems to be widely ignored.
Everything I have read about the car seems to say that hydrogen fueled
cars are too expensive and hard to produce and the infrastructure isnt
there.

Do these same people think that cars were always cheap to make and
that the US was covered with gas stations? Of course it wasnt, the
point is that this is far and way the best alternative to gasoline,
and if anything the potential to add hydrogen fueling stations exists
with the current gas station infrastructure.
I believe hybrids are merely a bandaid for our problems and if we want
to avoid even higher gas prices we need to make hydrogen fuel cells be
the wave of the future no matter what it costs. I just wish more
people would realize this and take the necessary steps to make it
happen.

Good News!
Good news for my readers....all 3 or so of you, if you still exist. I have discovered that Pazanchium can now go mobile. What does that mean for you, it means that whenever I am bored or have a thought now I can post from my phone. The postings will likely be shorter, since I end up getting really sick of typing on such a small keyboard, but they will hopefully be more frequent and remind me how I can ramble online and someone somewhere actually might read it.
Before I go, there is something I want to put in writing before anything can happen for people to think it was not my original idea. That is the fact that the Cleveland Browns will not win more than 8 games this season. My actual prediction is 6-10 and I will go into more detail about this in my annual NFL rankings post sometime in August. I just want everyone to know that no matter what injuries occur in training camp or later that I have 100% faith in the Browns not living up to expectations this coming season. A few reasons why are first that last year they played the easiest schedule by far last year. Somewhere in the .431 opponent winning percentage area. When you factor in that they also played the 16-0 Patriots that winning percentage looks even worse. They played nearly every team picking in the top 10 last year and still didnt make the playoffs. The NFL has seen past this type of season and forces teams that were good in previous years to play much harder schedules. This season there schedule looks to be brutal and I think they suffer from that a great deal. Another problem I see the Browns running into is their total and utter lack of a secondary. Their best DB (and only one I could name) was Leigh Bodden, who appeared to have what it takes to be successful in this league, was sent to Detroit in the Shaun Rogers deal. Now in the pass happy NFL this appears to be a recipe for a disaster, yes their D-line is better, and yes the Giants won a Super bowl with minimal stars in their secondary, but I don't see Shaun Rogers or Corey Williams playing as well as they have in the past now that they are household names and are in a much different situation. Shaun Rogers has bust written all over him. Anytime you give a streaky player with weight issues and a nonchalant attitude 25 million dollars guaranteed you are setting yourself up for failure. Another less obvious point is the lack of draft picks this year. If you look at playoff teams in the past they all appear to have one or two rookies step up and provide that energy boost from somewhere unexpected. This was the case in 2005 when the Bengals went 11-5 and was the case with the Giants last year with Kevin Boss and others. The Browns not only mortgaged their future on this year, but will not be expecting anything from their 2 or 3 late round picks (if they even make the team). Then there is the QB issues. Derek Anderson is in a tough spot, he over achieved last season and now is one bad outing away from a benching despite being resigned. He showed he was vulnerable late last season and with the moves the Browns have made has high expectations and a high paid QB behind in him Brady Quinn. A slow start would mean Quinn would be forced to start for a team that has everything riding on this year. That is an awful lot of pressure for two guys who no one knows if they are for real to have on their shoulders. With everything riding on high expectations in a tough division I do not see the Browns stepping up to the plate. If there is any way to bet on the failures of the Cleveland Browns believe me I will have a great amount of money on it. Then when it all plays out how I see it i can tell the ESPN analysts and Cleveland fans (the same ones who thought the 37-46 Indians would win the World Series this year) that I am right. From a guy who watched the 2006 Bengals fall apart the year after a blow to Carson Palmers knee ended our season prematurely I feel bad for Browns fans who will be disappointed with anything less than a Super Bowl win.

Transportation Methods in the US
Before I get into my purpose of this post let me just say that Blogspot is total garbage if it will not allow me to make a custom hyperlink and will require me to leave these completely tacky ones on here. I may be leaving to move to Wordpress if this issue is not figured out immediately.

This article talks about an issue that has come to mind lately about the inadequateness of the United States and more specifically its government. The basic premise is that the United States has rather primitive forms of travel as compared to other nations such as Europe and Japan. While Europe and Japan have found the joys of high speed trains, the United States continues on as if they do not exist. I understand that currently the infrastructure to pull off such task of improving our transportation system is not in place, but wasn't this the case at one time with regards to air travel, and car travel?
Lets look at the pros before we go any further. The government is currently on a huge kick to improve our air and cut down on pollution with various perks such as tax incentives for hybrid cars, and forcing dealers to have higher MPG ratings on their cars. While these are all good ideas they are mere short term fixes that still create pollution, and yet they continue to overlook the high speed electric train as a way to make a serious statement in regards to our environment?
The article says that the main reason that train travel has no real future is that the government does not want to do it. Now if I remember correctly the cross-country trains in the 1800's were one of the major reasons that America moved ahead of so many other countries at that time, yet the government refuses to be involved with such a project.
From my own personal point of view the idea of being able to hop on a train for half the price and double the time of air travel seems like a pretty good idea especially considering the hoops we jump through in order to actually board a plane these days (thank you Taliban). I would be much more likely to spend 100 dollars to go to Chicago on a 2 hour train ride than I would be to pay 200 dollars to make the same trip via air. Its not that I do not think time is money, because we all know this is true, but the advantage of the 100 dollars in my pocket would greatly outweigh the extra hour of travel time. With the imminent merger of Delta and Northwest airline ticket prices are likely to increase causing greater need for alternative methods of transportation. The problem with air travel is that it is not as convienent or cost effective for most people to use outside of the business world. It would cost entirely too much to fly a family of 4 to some destination, rent a car for a week, and fly home. That is why car travel is so huge in our country. Cars are great don't get me wrong, and they are nicer than trains in the grand scheme of things, but couldn't we improve our environment more if we used them more strictly for local trips and errands?
Another positive that would arise from this when you look at the eastern seaboard, almost all of the major cities are booming with business, money, and people looking to get out and do things. If there were near limitless possibilities of where to go via train wouldn't more people hop on one from NYC to Philly for a weekend with friends/family? My thought is yes, but the way it is currently they must fly (expensive), drive (time consuming and limited city parking) or walk (impossible) so they would rather just not go. Trains would take the best of all these things and put them together.
With all the advantages and reasons to have trains in the US it will likely not happen in our lifetime because the government does not want it to. The government spends too much money on totally ridiculous things, and is more careless with our money than we even know. Government workers are worthless and it is no fault of theirs. They are paid to do what they do and human nature is that if they only have to work 40 hours a week to get their raise, and working 50 won't help them, why should they sacrifice time with family and friends? For this reason many private firms are paid to go in and do what government employees do not do because they are able to do the job better and faster. In my job I work hard and fast because I am forced to. We have limited budgets, and high expectations because that is how you make people excel, by giving them goals they can reach with time and effort, and giving them strong incentives to reach those goals.
So what does all this mean? Well I think that in order for the United States to take a step forward in regards to transportation the government needs to recognize its inefficiencies and take steps to solve this. My proposal is that the government enters into a joint venture with private firms to create a network of high speed trains and mass transit. If private firms were paid by the government to build the infrastructure it would end up costing far less, and being completed much faster. Once the system is in place the government could allow companies to run the trains as they would any other business, essentially giving away the system to willing and qualified companies. By paying for the implementation of the system the US government would be putting its stamp of approval on the process, and by allowing the companies to treat the system as if it were a regular business they would strive to keep costs down, be efficient and produce a profit. They could allow only a certain percentage of the market share to be owned by one single company so as to avoid any issues stemming from a monopoly, and this way firms could work with each other to increase the number of overall rails as a way to continure increasing their assets while maintaining a proper portion of the market share.
Do I think any of this will happen anytime soon? Absolutely not, but it is defintely something to think about and I think would do alot to ensure that the United States is one of the smartest and most advanced countries in the world. It is mind boggling to me that no one seems to have thought about this, or made any strides toward fixing it. They all seem to caught up in their campaigns, endorsing candidates, and avoiding ever actually answering a question. Such is the world we live in...and to think WE have one of the best governmental systems in the world. Think how good things could be...

DC
First I would like to apologize to my readers for not having written in awhile...all 6 of you
With that said I hope that I will begin writing much more, but frankly when you work 60 hours a week and want to fall asleep every second you aren't at work, writing for fun kinda loses its appeal. Now onto the good stuff...
This last weekend I decided to take my Saturday night and Sunday and take a whirlwind trip to Washington DC to visit some friends from Dayton for a birthday party. Now let me just say if you are ever totally bored of the same people and the same thing, this is a great idea, especially since I was gone for a mere 25 hours. I flew out of CBUS at 530 on Saturday after work, and arrived in DC, hoped on the subway for a little 20 minute jaunt, walked a couple blocks and boom! free beer, and long lost friends!! How awesome is that! I hadn't seen some of these people since I transferred from UD 4 years ago and it seriously was like nothing had changed whatsoever. Even some of the people that I didn't know I definitely recognized and after about 3 beers it was no big deal to rehash my freshman year of awesomeness. Now I think I should say that while I do not regret leaving UD when I see my student loan payment stemming from just a year and a half there, but I definitely think I would have had a blast there just the same way I did at OSU. Of the people I met at Dayton I think they were much cooler than some of the people I met and no longer talk to here in the bus, but regardless I don't regret any of the moves I have made or where I ended up...
Some thoughts that crossed my mind over the weekend:
1. Living in the Midwest definitely has its advantages, but also disadvantages as well. Basically while things and cost of living in Ohio is cheap, I do not have the advantage of being exposed to the markets and their trends and all that goes on in the epicenter of the business world. Now while no one I met from the NYC has a job any better than mine, being a financial analyst for a hedgefund would be more of a learning experience of the markets than is my job doing taxes...because if this I have decided that I must read everything I can to learn as much as possible so as not to give away my advantage of being in Ohio which is that I can put more money away and get rich because I am not dropping 1500 on rent a month.
2. DC is expensive...there is a 10% sales tax on everything (due to a lack of state income tax) but not only that everything is just higher priced. Now in addition to this there is a great public transportation system, and more authentic awesome food that the whole state of OH has in just one DC block. Our idea here of mexican food is chipotle, there they have millions of authentic mexican food that is all better than chipotle. Of that I am most jealous.
3. The eastern seaboard is all so close and accessible that DC, Philly, and NYC are all a short drive, or bus ride away, which would make it awesome to travel to for a fun weekend with friends or just to have a new place to go.
4. Sleeping on a couch with 2 other guys is not comfortable or a good way to relax during busy season, regardless I would do it over 100 times if I could.
5. Jumbo slice tastes no good in the morning
6. Good friends will always be your friend no matter how long or how far you go between visits.
7. Old school parties are still a blast
8. Sangria and coke might be the sweetest drink ever, but is actually not too bad
9. I can still take shots of tequila like a champ...lime or no lime...
10. The Derby will be more fun this year than in the past...and that is definitely an amazing thing.
11. There is lots of stuff out there on the internet I never knew was there, and I wish I still didn't
12. If you drink enough, where you sleep doesn't matter

Redemption Day
For the past year The Ohio State Buckeyes have taken a lot of criticism about their perofrmance in the 2007 BCS National Championship Game, and for the past 57 days (and yes that's how long it has been since Ohio State has last played) they have been listening to why they dont belong in this years BCS National Championship Game.
Now dont get me wrong, I can understand how numerous other teams can make compelling arguments as to why they should be in the National Championship game, but with that said, Ohio State is arguably the only deserving team playing tonight!
Ohio State is the only one loss team who's sole loss came against an opponent participating in a BCS bowl. Not LSU (lost to Kentucky and Arkansas) not USC (lost to Stanford and Oregon) not Oklahoma (lost to Colorado and Texas Tech) and not Georgia (lost to South Carolina and Tennessee).
So just about everyone outside of Columbus, Ohio may think I'm crazy but Ohio State WILL redeem themselves by finally beating a SEC team, and when the game is over they will bring that 2008 BCS National Championship trophy back to the OH where it belongs!
And here are a couple reasons why:
1. LSU isn't exactly as dominant as everyone says they are. The Tigers have experienced many struggles throughout the season. Outside of the first two games against Mississippi State and Virginia Tech, the Tigers did not soundly defeat one BCS Conference team. Four of the wins came by a touchdown or less. In games against 7-6 Alabama and 3 win Mississippi, the Tigers nearly lost. It took a miraculous fourth down play to beat Auburn, a trick play to get past 6-6 South Carolina, and four fourth down conversions to escape four loss Florida. Now the Buckeyes may be in some trouble if the September LSU shows up tonight, but the Tigers were an average team for the final two and a half months of the season, so why should anyone expect anything different tonight?
2. Coaching. Les Miles isn't Urban Meyer. For all the wins and good things he's done since taking over as the LSU head man he's considered more of a great motivator and gutsy game manager than a high-IQ X's and O's guy. Jim Tressel's reputation may have taken a hit after last years debacle, but he's still an amazing 73-15 (83%) including four straight bowl wins (before the Florida loss) since taking the helm at Ohio State.
3. The Buckeye Offensive line. If its not the best in college football it's easily in the top 3. It hasn't faced a defensive front like LSU's, but tackles Alex Boone and Kirk Barton are each Outlander caliber talents who'll be stalwarts on NFL lines for years to come. The Buckeye front five have allowed a mere 14 sacks on the year. LSU may be the best front they have faced all year, but the Buckeye big-men will undoubtedly win their share of battles.
4. The nation's number 1 defense is...Ohio State. Dog the Big-Ten all you want, but the Conference has some solid offenses with 6 ranking in the top 50 nationally. While there aren't any high-octane killers, Michigan and Wisconsin have tremedous rushing attacks that were held in check by the Buckeye D, Northwestern's 11th-ranked passing offense was held to 120 yards, no one threw for more than 269, and only Illinois ran for more than 160. Ohio State gave up four surprising touchdown passes to Juice Williams and the Illini, along with a soul-crushing fourth quarter march, but that was about it. As good as the overall stats are, they are actually even better considering the offense gave up some scores, including two to Michigan State. Oh yeah, and that team up north that put up 524 yards of offense on Florida was held to just 91 by the stingy Buckeye D!
5. Speed? Yes, Ohio State can run with LSU, and any other SEC team for that matter. You dont get 59 players drafted in 7 years without having a ton of speed and athleticism flowing through the program. Despite how things looked against Florida, that Ohio State team could run with anyone, and this one certainly has the overall team speed to stay with LSU. Now that doesn't necessarily mean the Buckeyes will play fast, but if it's a question of running, no one other than Trindon Holliday has the ability to run past this group.
6. The Buckeye defensive front should be able to get into the backfield. While the LSU O-line is strong when it comes to powering the ball up the middle it lacks the ability to consistently protect the passer. All year long, teams have been able to get to the Tiger quarterback, and Ohio State should be able to pin its ears back and get consisent pressure on passing plays. Vernon Gholston has the ability to get past any tackle in America. Just ask Jake Long!
7. Last year is last year but is there any bigger motivation than last years 41-14 loss to Florida? It has been a year since the title game debacle and the players have to be sick of hearing how slow they are. Even Jim Tressel sent out a DVD to his players summarizing all the negative publicity surrounding his players and program. Florida came into last years game with a great game-plan while the Buckeyes came in a little too confident and never made the necessary adjustments needed to get back into the game. Now, this years Buckeyes have that same chip on their shoulder just like Florida did last year.
Ohio State didn't get to be Ohio State by not being able to adapt and adjust. This was the nation's number 1 team for a portion of the season, and it still occupies that top spot right now. This team is really that good.

New Year's (and Life) Resoluation
Since it is the beginning of a new year and fat people around the country are making their new years resolutions I have decided to post a list of all the things that I want to do (mostly sports related, but scattered with other awesome ideas as well.) I do not intend for this to be things I plan to accomplish in the next year, but more like things I think everyone should do before they die.
1. Attend the Super Bowl
-I had it all worked out to do this in 2008, but Marvin Lewis decided to end that run by week 3). But I will make it to one regardless of whether my team is in it or not.
2. Attend a OSU National Championship Game (victory style)
I went to the game last year and everything up to and including Ted Ginn's opening kickoff return was awesome...the rest was horrible, and while I cannot go this year, I am hoping that I will again get to see my team go to the National Championship Game and watch them win it in person.
3. Go to all 16 (and hopefully 19 (see #1)) Bengals Games.
Since I am a season ticket holder I have secured at least 8 games, and clearly this is down the road sometime because it will not be cheap to go to all the stadiums, buy tickets, hotels, booze etc. But hopefully it will be an awesome experience to share with a friend (see Nashville 2005) for a small taste of the potential.
4. Go to a Final Four
I had the chance last year but tax season ruined it, so clearly I will have to change professions in order to accomplish this, but no worries it would be fun, and for the record I could care less who makes it to the Final Four
5. Go to a World Series Game
Preferrably a deciding game so I can jump around with the Fans, but since the Reds are no good I will have to settle for any World Series (but if the Reds make one I would do everything in my power to get there).
6. Go to Lambeau Field
Now this one is more just for the history of it, but I could accomplish it if I picked the right season for #3
7. Ski a mountain in Colorado I have no business being on
This one should prolly be done last so I can accomplish the others before my fateful death on the ski slopes, but if I wait too long I will likley be too old to risk it, so I am planning on doing this ASAP.
8. Go to as many beaches as possible.
Now this is rather intangible because of the number of beaches in the world, but I enjoy counting the number I have been too, and along these lines think it would be a fun way to travel which leads me to...
9. Go to all 50 states
I'm sure lots of people have this goal, and since I don't travel much for work at this point it could be rough, but I think it would be great fun to have one of those trailer that double as a house things with the maps of the US on the side and all the state you have been to colored in.
10. Go to Europe
I have never been and may have missed my best opportunity to go with time off this summer, and a friend being there, but I figure that I will go at some point, and simply couldn't have afforded it up until this point, but I will definitely go when I get the chance.
11. Go to Australia, New Zealand
They just seem like awesome places and I have never traveled or studied abroad and therefore plan to go to both at some point before I die
12. Go to the NFL draft
I like to thing that I am one of the originators of the NFL draft party/drinking game, but I can only imagine how awesome it would be if I was actually there. I would yell at bad picks and cheer for good ones like it was my team making them all
13. Attend the Kentucky Derby classy like
Now I have been to the Derby 3 times before and each time was an amazing (and expensive) experience, but at some point I would love to score a box for the races and not be in the infield just to see what its like. I have an uncle who might be able to do this but for now I am content to stay in the slums and wear my searsucker suit!
14. Indy 500
I haven't been but have heard its an awesome time, and figure at some point I can be a total redneck and go party like a nut for a memorial day weekend.
15. Go to as many concerts as I possibly can
This is another intangible, but have never gone to a concert I haven't enjoyed so it would be awesome to continue to make this a goal.
ESPN could help me out with about 10 of these if they would just hire me away to write about sports and whatever else I think is awesome (page 2 kinda work). Pass this on if you know people at ESPN!!! I'm sure there are more that I will come up with, but for now this is my starting list, and I will add more as I think of them...Suggestions are welcome too, as I likely forgot a few awesome ones. With that I'm going to go join the thousands of fat people at the gym (I figure they will be gone by Jan 7th)

You Can't Pick Your Family
So being home this week for Christmas has led me to believe that if it weren't for family you would probably only hang out with the kind of people that you generally get along with. This is not to say that I do not get along with my family, because I do, or that I do not like my family because I do like them. However, with friends that make you mad, you can either confront them if they are a good friend and work through the rest, or you can lose them because they aren't worth the trouble in trying to make it work because they are either too involved in their own self interest or the pursuit of something pointless. When it comes to family however, you only have one choice and that is to deal with it because they are not going anywhere. Because there is this sense of security that no matter what they say you can't leave them, some things come out that sometimes need to be said that would otherwise not be said, and other things that should not have been said and were. I just think it is an interesting phenomenon that no matter how awesome your family is, they still manage to drive you nuts, and that no matter how cool you think someone elses parents are they still manage to drive their own children nuts. I think it is just the way life is going to be, but I find it funny how the different perspectives and angles of things shed different light on a particular group of people.
Note: I have no idea where I was going with this post, and I am exhausted so it probably doesn't make any sense, but perhaps I will elaborate on this subject more later.

Football Recap
So far I am only 7-8 in my picks for the week, but I can break even if the Vikings take care of Chicago tonight. But more importantly I was dead on with not losing all the games Jones wanted such as Baltimore, Dallas, and NE in a Windstorm, and had it not been for Jones being so avid about not going with Houston I would be richer for my thoughts today.
For the 3 people who might have some vested interest in my fantasy team I will just tell you that it is a horrible team. Antonio Gates might as well die for the fact that his team puts up 51 points and he has 1 catch for 8 stinking yards! Are you kidding me??? how does that even happen, I coulda caught a pass for more than 10 yards against the Lions D. I suppose some of the blame goes to Phillip Rivers, because frankly he is just terrible, but still an utter disappointment as I got thrashed in week two of my playoff matchup and am now at best down 25 bucks.
I will have more thoughts/pictures in regards to the festivities of Kevin's wedding soon, but for those of you who were there the video of the dance Mark and I were trying to mimic will be posted soon too...if you cant wait type in Kelly Washington in YouTube and watch it...We were bad I know, but hey, at least we tried!

My best comparison to Bobby Petrino is that he is like the really hot chick that you some how end up dating and she talks about other guys all the time, and you know she is eventually going to leave but you just hope that you might be the guy who can turn her around and lock her down. Fantasy Football Thoughts
So as another fantasy football season winds down into the playoffs, and for me the consolation bracket, I found myself wondering what happened to my fantasy prowess from a couple years ago when I managed to win the Super Bowl with Josh McCown as my QB and Deshaun Foster and Jamal Lewis as my RB's the year Lewis came back from jail and stunk the place up. This year I started off 2-0 while managing the 9th lowest scoring total in the league through 2 games. Things didn't get much better from there, I basically lost all the important games and only beat a few teams that weren't playing for anything either. While passing on Rudi Johnson turned out to be quite fortunate, taking Willis McGahee and Reggie Bush instead doesn't appear to be much better. My defense stunk all year (by defense I mean luck because the teams you are playing aren't scoring points) and because of this interesting fantasy stat I have decided to give an award next year for the team with the best "defense." I have a few players worth keeping for next season, but Adrian Peterson is not one of them unfortunetly. My plan for next season is to realize that having a QB IS a good thing because I am sure the majority of teams that win Super Bowls aren't starting Rex Grossman or Eli Manning, and to maybe let a monkey pick my team. I think that my over analysis, and expansive knowledge of football stats and players ends up costing me. I need to be sure to focus on taking the best player, regardless of my personal feelings about them (I tend to not take Steelers, Browns or Patriots because of my utter hatred for them) Kevin meanwhile got stuck with a roster of 14 guys he despises and is still playing for a spot in the Super Bowl. While this may make stat watching painful to your personal life at least you can have bragging rights when it comes to fantasy football....and maybe that way I wouldn't have to pay out $250 of my own cash since I managed to spend all of the money people gave me to hold onto for the league winnings....oh well such is life
Career vs. Passion Round 1
So while I was sitting here at work I began to think about what I want to do with my life. I am three months into my career in the tax field and can't figure out if I actually enjoy it or completely despise it. I listen to ESPN radio for the majority of my work day and it always makes me wish I had a talk show or had my own sports column instead of entering numbers and printing reports. I know many people say that you should do what you love, and while I agree that is important the truth is that isn't always possible. I know I personally would love to be Bill Simmons and write about current sports events, MTV reality shows, and my favorite hometown sports teams all while going to games, meeting athletes, making my weekly NFL picks (if gambling were legal), and playing with the NBA trade machine constantly and still collect a paycheck from the Worldwide Leader. But the one thing I learned in college is that you have to get the piece of paper and it has to be something that can actually get you a job if you want to survive on your own. I know for me I loved history in high school, but yet had I been a history major I would have had two options. 1. I could have gone to law school, not a bad idea, but not something I was passionate enough about to actually go into debt and pursue. 2. Become a history teacher. I have always thought about being a teacher but it was more for the fun I could have writing tests where all the answers are C, or just one question, etc. etc. While I think this could be fun at some point it was definitely not what I wanted to do forever. A friend of mine did what he "loved" for three years only to be away from school for a bit and realize that he wasn't going to be able to support a family by doing that. Which brings me to my point. Other than a few incredibly lucky individuals most people could only do what they "love" if all professions paid equally. Of course this is not the case, and therefore we must find alternative ways to do what we love, whether it be writing about things on a blog like this, or spending our non-working hours indulged in our passions. The truth is that my interest in my job along with the paycheck I recieve are enough to get me out of bed in the morning, but not what I see myself doing forever. I think the most important thing to realize is that everyone who has ever done anything with their lives/careers has had to do the boring entry level work. I think that in order to actually do what you really love you have to spend some time doing something that you do not necessarily love so that you will be financially prepared and equally eager to jump on opportunities to do what it is you really want to pursue. In order to know what you really like, you must also know what you do not like. I plan to use this job as a learning experience to get in a position that I can start my own company, or pursue a career that makes me want to get up early every morning to pursue. In the meantime I will continue to listen to ESPN radio, rant and rave about it, and read as much as I can about any and every topic so that I will be a better more well rounded individual when I am doing what it is I actually love to do. Les Miles
Les Miles it has been reported (again) is still in the hunt for the Michigan job. He said he is staying at LSU then signed a new contract and now has called Michigan and talked to them. Now I have said all along that he would end up the Michigan Head Coach, and he most likely will, while being sure to piss off all the LSU fans the same way Nick Saban did Dolphins Fans. I personally am extremely excited for him to become their coach, since he will likely get torched by OSU in the National Championship Game, and then continue to get beat down yearly by OSU in the annual battle. Good Luck Saban....errr...Miles at Michigan where beating OSU and winning Bowl Games are the only things that matter and you will most likely fail.
On a secondary note, Michigan listed their Head Coaching job on the schools job website. They said the position would require working 40 hours a week and some nights and weekends. I just started working and I work more than 40 hours now...I dont know if it was a joke or what, but the point is the Michigan Job is a joke and I don't blame Lloyd Carr for retiring. Good luck Wolverines against Florida.
